Mecklenburg County voters approved a tax referendum on Tuesday to fund a multi-billion dollar regional transportation overhaul. The new 1% sales tax increase will support road, rail, and bus projects. The pro-referendum vote led the anti-referendum vote by 52.1% to 47.9%. Supporters, including major businesses, celebrated the victory. Opponents raised concerns about the regressive nature of the tax increase. The tax is projected to generate over $19 billion over 30 years, with funds allocated to road, rail, and bus projects. A new regional transit authority will oversee the public transit system. Charlotte officials estimated an average annual cost of $240 per household. |
Matthews Fire & EMS has been awarded a Class 1 rating by the Insurance Services Office and the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal, putting them in the top one percent of fire departments nationwide. Chief Rob Kinniburgh's leadership played a key role in achieving this milestone. This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of the department, ensuring that the community has one of the most capable fire departments in the country. Only 39 fire departments in North Carolina and 335 in the United States currently hold a Class 1 ISO rating. The new rating will take effect on January 1, 2026, potentially resulting in savings on insurance premiums for residents. |
